Summer is coming and with it 3 long months of the kids being home!!! I know it’s a relief from the hectic mornings of scrambling for breakfast, finding shoes, and packing lunches. It’s a much needed break for moms and kids. But after a few weeks of relaxing you start to hear “I’m bored.”
You don’t know if you can handle hearing another episode of Cailou. You wonder if all the things your child learned at school are going to be forgotten.
Please don’t pull out the workbooks!
Instead find ways to encourage your child to play and learn. As a teacher and a homeschool mom, I know having a break from the school routine is important. But I also want my kids to keep learning. So we focus on learning through play.
There are endless ways to encourage learning through play. Here are just 10 ideas to get you started!
This is an awesome math game that teaches counting, adding, and subtracting. It’s adorable, well made and a big hit with my 6 and 4 year old boys.
The best thing I ever did to encourage my kids to learn math was to let them play with math blocks! Don’t force them into lessons or workbooks over the summer, just get the blocks out. Let them play and build and as they do they will pick up so much about math! Base 10 blocks are great because they show the relationship between ones, tens, and hundreds! Kids begin to understand place value, adding, and subtracting just by playing with these.
This alphabet splash pool is a blast! You can introduce letters and sounds to young toddlers in the pool. For older preschoolers try saying the letter sounds and having them find the right letter in the pool.
The Activ Flyer
It’s summer, and time to get outside! What I found with the activ flyer is that it is lighter, and not a traditional flying disk! You can learn new tricks with this flyer, and encourage hand-eye coordination with your kids – all while having good, old fashioned fun! With a toy as easily packable as the Active Flyer, all you need is a picnic on a beautiful day to top it off!
FunPhix Construction Play Set
Shapes, design, and team building fun! Get your kids outside and thinking while playing! Your little builder has endless opportunities with this whopping 199 piece set! And on those rainy days? This play set is great indoors, and easy to assemble/disassemble!
Insect Lore Deluxe Butterfly Garden
My childhood favorite! Nothing is more beautiful than watching your butterflies grow – and your child’s curiosity grow along with it! Cultivating your own butterflies is also STEM.org verified!
Click n’ Play Foam Pogo Jumper
We have all tried a pogo stick at one point – and probably fell multiple times in the process. The difference about the Click n’ Play Foam Pogo Jumper is that it has a rectangular base with LED lights that ignite while jumping! Whether your kid is novice to pogo jumping, or you are a seasoned pro (that’s right – this toy is for adults too!), this toy is a great option that works inside and out! Huge plus – the Pogo Jumper strengthens your core muscles while having fun!
Always a go to classic – we’ve seen Connect Four in a variety of forms over the years! But this game can encourage our young ones to recognize colors, count, and most importantly have fun! The board game can be take anywhere – but if you want to mix it up you should check out this GIANT yard game version! Have fun with your kids on beautiful summer days, or step up your patio entertainment with your friends this summer! You can never go wrong with this competitive classic.
Sight Word Swat!
Now this game is amusing to watch – a sight word is called out that has to be found, then you have to search and be the first one to “swat” the fly with the correct word on it! Sight Word Swat! encourages your young one to strengthen their reading, spelling, and vocab words! May the best player win!
Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy
Babies – enough said! We are moms afterall! And our babies need fun toys too that encourage development! Introduce your baby to this Take Along Musical Toy that not only is fun to play with but encourages grasping and is suitable to teeth on! Oh – and you can adjust the sound. No more overly loud melodies!
