Can you smell the hot dogs and hamburgers?
Or vegan burgers if that’s your fancy) and just taste the juicy watermelon NOW? It’s the 4th of July and I’m sure I’m not the only one who associates holidays with food- in fact I think that’s our modern day human behavior!
Don’t get me wrong, I also think about fireworks, family time and parades. I grew up riding the fire trucks in the parades of my hometown and absolutely LOVE the carnival themed party that would happen downtown afterwords! I loved playing games with cousins and staying up late for the spectacular light show in the sky! (Fun fact- even as an adult I sometimes have to wear sunglasses to watch fireworks because the level of brightness hurts my eyes!)
But I’m not sure if I really grasped fully what the REAL reason was that we celebrated the 4th of July. I think the best association I had was thanks to the song “God Bless the USA”- where the meaning of the day really MEANT something. But even now, as a mom- I hope I’m doing enough to emphasize to my ids the real reason we celebrate and what patriotism looks like. Do they really understand that we are the home of the FREE and land of the BRAVE? How could they really know what the soldiers of this country did for them if I’m not teaching them?
